Recent News Page last updated: 4th April 2017 by Simon Parsons 4th April Mimi Owen, Fi Challinor and Katie Webster had a very successful outing at the Manchester Marathon yesterday with all 3 setting Pbs. There were also age records for both Fi and Mimi. Mimi's run rated a massive 79.56% just half a percent shy of a Platinum standard and placed her 8th in her age group. Great running, one and all! Elsewhere, Keith Cotton ran the Liverpool Half Marathon in a time of 1:47:02. Saturday saw Whippets running in parkruns at Ipswich, Shrewsbury and Wepre, with Louise Baldwin setting a PB at Shrewsbury. 30th March One more race from the weekend. Mark Gregory came 52nd in the Llantysilio fell race on Saturday in 1 hr 30m 18s while Mandy Lewis was 58th in 1 hr 55m 28. 29th March More than 30 well groomed Whippets turned out for the Club Photo before the first light run of the year. On their return, their dog bowls were filled to busting with all manner of sweet and savoury bakes! It's fair to say there were no hungry Whippets last night. Quite rightly, all who baked were acclaimed as winners - but special mention must go to Liz Featherstone for the chocolate Whippets and club flags that topped her buns. Club photo and baking pictures to follow in due course. Thanks to Charlotte Wainwright for doing the photographic honours. 26th March A great day for racing in warm spring sunshine. The flat course at Arley Hall 10k provided rich pickings for the three Whippets who ran. Gareth Dodd had race of the day coming home in 34th place to set a new Club Record - that's not an easy feat, these days! There was also a pb for Liz Featherstone while Dean returned to form, running his fastest 10k since 2013. One other result, James Walker did the Wepre parkrun yesterday. 25th March It was the final round in the Winter Handicap at Shrewsbury today and James Rainbow writes: "This morning saw the final round of the Winter Handicap and I have got the results checked by an independent adjudicator! It was either the sunshine or adrenaline of the finale that meant most predications were well off the mark. There were only two who kept cool heads, Helen was only 8 seconds behind prediction, closely followed by husband Ken who was within 9 seconds of his prediction! Simon and Keith were next best on the day but they only just got within one minute of their forecast, mainly because both ran PB’s! The series overall lead was turned on its head in the last round, as Ken topped the table. His round two score was discounted, leaving three excellent scores of 25, 17 and 9! Dean’s final round score has been discounted and he came in second overall. It was very close run for third, with Keith pipping Simon by 1 point. The best prediction of the whole race series was Dean in round 2, only 5 seconds off. Well done to all, with 7 Whippets figuring in the overall table." Louise Baldwin and Tom Woodworth were also running at Shrewsbury - but did not take part in the handicap. And, over at Telford Katie Webster set a great new 5k pb, well done, all! 21st March Don't forget that next Tuesday - the 28th there will be a club photo before running at 7pm! Please turn up in good time for the photo in club kit/clothing. And, after the run, it's the Great Whippets Bake Off! 20th March A somewhat quieter weekend than last with just one race to report (so far). A good pack of Whippets contested the Shrewsbury 10k with Gareth Dodd bounding home in 9th place. There was a Whippets 10k pb for Mirta Calvo and a pb for Simon Huxley, well done both! Alongside those three were: Jon Morgan, Mark Gregory, Keith Cotton, Dave Thornton, Fi Challinor, and Louise Baldwin. Fi also did the South Manchester Park Run on Saturday. 13th March I think we'd better call yesterday Endurance Sunday! Duncan Meredith completed his first Marathon at Wrexham and, subject to the organiser's confirmation, wins the Blockbuster challenge! Well done Duncan, I think that glass of Champers was very well deserved. Hills on Tuesday! Also running at Wrexham was Liz Featherstone completing the accompanying half marathon. While over the border in Shropshire, Jon Morgan and Ken Robbins completed the Ironbridge Half Marathon. Elsewhere, Richard and Clare Stewart completed the Silverstone Half as part of Claire's marathon preparation. Meanwhile, Rob Sharam ran the Knighton 20 miler at Stafford - it used to be the Stafford 20. And, catching up from a week ago, Andy Heath also raced a 20 miler - completing the Rhayader Round the Lakes 20. And just for good measure, Fi completed the very challenging Grizzy on the southwest coast at Seaton. The hilly and muddy course required a hose down at the finish from local firemen - it doesn't look like Fi minded the cold water too much! It's making me tired just typing all this lot up. Well done, one and all! 12th March Yesterday saw Whipppets in Parkrun action at Cassiobury (James Walker), Dudley (Katie Webster) and Erddig (Keith Cotton). 5th March Yesterday saw round 3 of the Winter Handicap at Shrewsbury. James Rainbow writes: "Luckily the river level didn’t rise any higher and round 3 of the winter handicap went ahead this morning, with 7 Whippets taking part (unfortunately the organiser was injured!). I think there must have been plenty of practising going on because the first 5 runners all finished within 20 seconds of their predicted time and the best of the lot was Keith, who was only 6 seconds out – well done. Overall Keith has 24 points and just leads Simon by 4 points but both only have two scores and need a good run in round 3. Dean sits in 3rd place and if he can better his first score of 45, then he will be right back in the mix...
